Disney gift cards are an excellent option to surprise a loved one with a present on any special occasion. At the same time, they are the perfect way to budget our numerous family trips to Disney theme parks.
The ultimate guide to Disney gift cards delves into every aspect of this magical card. From some basic facts and buying options to checking Disney gift card balance and keeping it secure, we have you covered.
Basic Facts about Disney Gift Cards
Let’s discover what exactly are Disney gift cards before we talk in detail about them.
In a nutshell, they are pre-loaded cards that you can easily use across the entire Disney landscape.
A Disney gift card is essentially cash, so you must keep it securely.
Disney gift cards are available in two formats;
- A physical card is available in select Disney stores or is delivered by mail when purchased online.
- The electronic card is instantly available through email upon purchase.
Those opting for the physical gift card can choose from 6o+ designs featuring all possible Disney characters, ranging from Mickey Mouse and Star Wars to Marvel, Disney Princesses, Tinkerbelle, Monsters Inc., and more.
Disney gift cards come pre-loaded in set amounts, with a minimum of $25 and a maximum of $500.
It is possible to top up the amount on your card. However, upon checking Disney gift card balance, the total value of the card cannot exceed $1000 at any given time.
No fee is involved when purchasing, using, transferring, or topping up a Disney gift card.
Best of all, the gift cards do not expire, and if you are wondering how to check your Disney gift card balance, it requires only a few clicks. More about this later.
Where Can I Buy Disney Gift Cards?
You can buy Disney gift cards at several Disney-owned and operated retail stores inside and outside Walt Disney World in Orlando and Disneyland Resorts in California.
Additionally, you can order them from shopDisney.com. Remember, it can take close to 10 days for physical cards to be delivered to your address when you purchase them online.
So, whenever we are short on time, we prefer the eCard, which arrives in our email within minutes.
It’s also possible to buy Disney gift cards from third-party retailers across the nation. Some of the major retailers that typically sell gift cards are;
- Best Buy
- Walmart
- Giant
- Home Depot
- Safeway
- Walgreens
If you are die-hard Disney fans looking for great deals like us, you might be better off buying Disney gift cards from;
- Target
- Costco
- Sam’s Club
- BJ’s Wholesale
We prefer the above because you can get a nifty 4-5% extra discount on gift cards if you are a member of any of these stores.
Do Disney Gift Cards Expire?
It’s pretty standard for us to get Disney gift cards as presents. Typically, we place them somewhere safe and then forget about them till one fine day, years later, the cards emerge from the depths of a drawer during spring cleaning.
Then there are times when we get a Disney gift card, but our vacation isn’t anytime soon. Or, we find a great discount deal and buy the cards even though we don’t plan to travel in the near future.
We are okay with all of the above because Disney gift cards do not expire.
Ever!
So, whether a week old or bought a decade ago, Disney gift cards remain active and work until the total amount loaded into them finishes.
Now the question arises, how to check the balance of your Disney card, especially if it has been lying around for years?
But before we do that, it’s good to note that the money loaded in your card over time remains unchanged since there is no usage fee. Yay!
Ways of Checking Disney Gift Card Balance
Whenever you purchase or get a Disney gift card (physical or electronic), you should make an account on the official Disney Gift Card website to keep track of all the cards.
It is possible to add up to six cards in one account, check their balances, transfer full amounts from one to another, and view your card transactions.
Should you have more than six cards, as we do, simply delete one of the cards temporarily from the account and add another in its place.
As for how to check your Disney gift card balance, there are four ways;
Online
The quickest way to check the balance is through the website.
- First, go to disneygiftcard.com
- Click on the “Check Balance” tab at the top of the page.
- Enter the Account Number mentioned on the back of the card or the email with the eCard.
- Enter the Security Code/PIN/EAN. It is mentioned in the email and can be found behind a covering on the backside of the physical gift card.
- You can now check your Disney gift card’s balance.
By Phone
The other option is to call the toll-free number 1-877-650-4327 (also mentioned on the back of your card) and ask the operator for the balance. Keep the card handy, as the operator will ask for the first 12 digits of the card number.
On the Receipt
Another way to check the balance of your Disney gift card is to read the bottom of the last purchase receipt. It will have the remaining amount on the card mentioned.
In-Store
Lastly, you can always ask the cashier at a Disney store for the balance amount on your Disney gift card.
Checking Disney Gift Card Balance without the Security Code?
If, for some reason, you do not have the 4- or 8-digit security code of your Disney Gift card, it is still possible to find out the balance.
You can call the toll-free number or ask the cashier at any Disney store.
Do I Need to Activate a Disney Gift Card?
No! A Disney gift card is activated as soon as you pay for it.
It is ready to use immediately after purchase.
Can I Reload My Disney Gift Card?
We have a bunch of “empty” Disney gift cards lying around the house.
Why?
Because we can reload them at any time, so there is no reason to throw them away.
Furthermore, since you now know how to go about checking your Disney gift card balance, there might be times when you want to top up the money before it finishes. This is very much doable.
There are two ways to reload your Disney gift card.
- You can transfer money from a connected and eligible Disney gift card via the disneygiftcard.com website. However, only the entire balance, and not partial, transfers up to $1000 are possible.
- The other option is to reload the card at any Disney location that sells gift cards. The amount can be anywhere from $5 to $1000. Again, the total amount on the card cannot exceed $1000.
Unfortunately, there is no way to top-up or reload a Disney gift card online at present.
What if my Disney Gift Card Balance is Not Enough?
Let’s assume you have some money left in your Disney gift card and don’t want to or can’t top it up. What do you do?
The good news is that you can use a Disney gift card along with any other mode of payment.
For example, you shop for souvenirs costing $100. But there is only $50 in your Disney gift card.
In such a situation, you can pay the remaining $50 in cash or using a credit/debit card.
Where Can I Use Disney Gift Cards?
Convenient, quick, and easy, you can use Disney gift cards at almost all Disney-owned properties, retail shops, theme parks, and websites.
Of course, some establishments may have restrictions when using gift cards on specific items or may place limits.
Furthermore, a few online stores may not accept multiple cards for a single order. Therefore, it is best to enquire before you make a purchase.

What if my Disney Gift Card is Stolen?
Since your Disney gift card is as good as money and anyone with access to it can use the card, one must immediately report it getting lost or stolen.
To do so, call 1-877-650-4327 and provide the customer service personnel with the first 12 digits of the card number.
They will then freeze the lost Disney gift card and transfer the balance to an alternate or new card. The Disney representative will also need the original proof of purchase receipt to make this transfer.
When to Buy a Disney Gift Card?
As a family who loves to visit Walt Disney World repeatedly, we often get asked when to buy a Disney gift card.
Our answer to the question is “anytime.” But that’s because we know we will eventually return to a Disney theme park or buy Disney products at some point.
Moreover, since checking Disney gift card balance is easy and it never expires, we stay on top of things when it comes to using the card.
However, for everyone else, it’s best to buy a Disney gift card when you know that you can spend the money on it.
Since there are no cash returns, except in rare cases, investing in a gift card closer to your Disney vacation is better.
Essential Things to Remember When Using Disney Gift Cards
A Disney gift card has several advantages. Still, before you get yourself a card, do keep in mind the following
- A Disney gift card is not an online wallet. You need to have a physical card to use it in stores. For online purchases, you will need the twelve-digit card number and a four-to-eight-digit security code.
- If you return any product bought through the card, the refund will go back into the Disney gift card.
- A Disney gift card is not redeemable for cash.
Final Thoughts
It’s a different story if you got a Disney card as a gift, but should you buy one on your own?
Yes!
We love to use Disney gift cards to budget our trips. They are easy to carry and allow us to stay within our pre-decided expenditures.
The cards are also a great lesson for kids in planning and budgeting their expenses.
Moreover, highlighting the importance of keeping the cards safe teaches them responsibility.
Lastly, the physical cards, without any money loaded and with their designs, make lovely souvenirs you can stick in your Disney vacation scrapbook.
